(Source: WhatSellsBest.com) - Bidding ended at $111,100 for this rare wax figure of Albert Einstein (1879-1955), created by the renowned wax sculptor Katherine Stubergh.
Why It's So Rare
The sculptor, Katherine Stubergh (1911-1960) was known for creating wax portraits of prominent people in the motion picture industry, as well as historical and contemporary figures.
Reportedly, the Einstein wax-figure was commissioned by Einstein himself, who apparently hired Stubergh shortly after coming to America.
The wax figure is stated to have been signed by Einstein, and also stated (in the sellers listing) to be the only one known to exist.
The sellers entire story regarding the wax figure's creation, provenance, and supporting documentation can be seen in the *eBay listing. But, the following statement from the listing, provides a summary of how the figure came to be:
"This Bizarre Rarity was commissioned by Albert Einstein himself, to be created by Katherine Stubergh (the legendary wax sculptress of the stars) shortly after he came to America. This amazing work was done as a “Live Blast” which means that Mr. Einstein actually sat with Stubergh in her studio as she took a mold casting off of his face and created this exact detailed work of art! This is the only one known to exist! If this wasn't already enough, on the back of the head, Einstein has signed the piece!"
There have been a few similarly rare and unusual Einstein collectibles sold in prior years.
- April, 2010 - $52,500 was paid for a Bronze of Einstein which was reportedly sculpted and signed by Sir Jacob Epstein in 1931.
- December, 2010 - $38,750 was fetched for two X-Ray images (taken in 1945) of Albert Einstein's head.
But, it may be a stretch to say either of these could be used as a solid comparable sales, because all the items are so unique in their own way.Video: Vintage footage of Professor Einstein. (Source: Youtube)
