DENVILLE, NEW JERSEY (VIDEO) – Green Jacket Auctions reports, a vintage Masters Tournament (Golf) Green Jacket, purchased for $5 in a thrift store, has fetched $139,349 in an online auction.
The jacket was reportedly spotted in a pile of used blazers, in a Toronto thrift store in 1994 by a golf enthusiast, who knew exactly what it was. Apparently it was held as an investment until its recent auction.
Masters Tournament Green Jackets are extremely rare. While Augusta National Golf Club did confirm its identity as an authentic early jacket. They were either unwilling or unable to disclose the previous owner's name, according to the auction listing.
"When the so-called “Thrift Store Green Jacket” was first discovered in 1994, the speculation was rampant. Was it real, and if so, where did it come from? The jacket itself revealed few clues. The internal tagging definitively dates the jacket to the early 1950s - one of the earliest green jackets in existence. But the original owner’s name was tantalizingly cut out of the jacket. Augusta National Golf Club may have unintentionally fanned the flames of speculation, as they confirmed the jacket’s authenticity but then refused to answer any questions as to the identity of its original owner. Could it be the long lost green jacket of a Masters Tournament Champion? Did a member mistakenly, or intentionally, remove the green jacket from the club’s grounds many years ago?"
With the owner’s name cut from the jacket. The next clue was the inside tag showing it was from Cullum's department store in Augusta. That's what placed it to the early-to-mid 1950s.

The Value of a Name
It's too bad they weren't able to link the jacket to a name. The right name can add tremendous value. In September 2013, a jacket, awarded to Horton Smith for his wins in 1934 and 1936, fetched $682,000 at auction. Reportedly it was the highest price ever paid for a golf memorabilia item at the time.
