ETWALL, UK - Hansons Auctioneers reports, a medieval ring found by a young metal detectorist, has fetched $10,000 (£7,100) at auction.
"I WAS SHAKING"
The 20-carat gold, iconographic medieval ring, was discovered by 30-year-old Adam Day, from East Hull, who had taken up metal detecting as a hobby three years ago. He was simply astonished by the discovery and knew right away it was special.
Mr Day stated: “I was shaking when I found it. It was quite close to the surface, not buried deep in the ground. It is engraved with St George and St Catherine and features floral emblems."
“Beverley Minster is nearby and it’s likely the ring belonged to a priest from there. It dates back to between 1450-1550.”
LOST BY BISHOP?
According to Mr Day, after receiving permission to explore the farmer’s land with his friend, and fellow metal detectorist Pete Birkett. He noticed Beverley Minster within sight of the field where he found the ring.
Beverley Minster, in Beverley, East Riding, is one of the largest parish churches in the UK. Thought of as a Gothic Masterpiece and bigger than a third of all English cathedrals. The Minster has a rich history, with its origins tied to Saint John of Beverley, in 700 AD.
Mr Days historical assessment of the ring is supported by Hansons’ Historica expert Adam Staples, who stated: “It may well have belonged to a bishop from Beverley Minster and would have been commissioned.”
WHY'S IT RARE?
Mr Staples cited the rings superb craftsmanship as being something only high-ranking figures such as bishops or nobility would have been able to afford at the time.
He went on to explain Medieval jewelry with fine decorative engraving, faceting, and rich historical value, is extremely rare.
The ring sold at auction to a private UK buyer $10,000 (£7,100) at Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire, January, 2018.
Mr Day, said: “I will be sharing the proceeds from the sale with two of my metal detecting friends and the farmer who owns the land where the ring was found.
